Department of Sociology within SPSF

The Department of Sociology is part of Sophia’s Program for Sustainable Futures (SPSF), one of Sophia’s English-based undergraduate programs. Within SPSF, students from currently six disciplines (Sociology, Education, Global Studies, Economics, Management, Journalism) study topics on sustainability in an interdisciplinary setting, while getting in-depth training in their respective discipline at the same time.

As part of SPSF, the Department of Sociology offers a wide range of courses in English. Students from the Japanese track are welcome to join these sociology courses (as long as they meet the language requirements). This gives students the opportunity to study sociological topics not only in Japanese, but also in English, and discuss them in an international environment. Here is a list of the classes we offer in English on a regular basis:

Principles of Sociology : Introduction to sociological thinking and basic sociological concepts

First Year Seminar in Sociology : Changing topics, students learn to academically approach sociological topics

Quantitative Methods in Sociology : Introduction to quantitative methods of empirical research

Qualitative Methods in Sociology : Introduction to qualitative methods of empirical research

Sociological Theory 1 + 2 : Comprehensive overview of classic and contemporary sociological theory

Broad range of lecture courses : Sociology of Globalization, Sociology of Families, Work and Employment in Japan, Social Change in Postwar Japan, Sociology of Happiness, Contemporary Social Problems, and more
